Make 4th of July family barbecue party a success

Every year the 4th of July comes to us as a reminder of the values that the United States of America stands for – freedom, equality and justice. This is also a reminder that it’s time to enjoy some good food under the summer sun, with family and friends. And what could be a better way to celebrate Independence Day than a successful cookout in the warm July sun. If you happen to be the host this year’s 4th of July barbecue then you need to have couple of tricks under your sleeve – besides grilling and smoking – to make your barbecue party an instant hit. In such a demanding situation, a helping hand of your teenage child would certainly take some pressure off you. Meanwhile, follow these simple but effective tips to make your party successful.

Cooking for all

There will be people of all ages present at the party – a vegetarian cousin, an aunt who complains of acidity, a self conscious sister-in-law who prefers white meat, and children who would want to hop around with a hotdog in their hands. So, you will have to be prepared with all varieties of tastes and preferences. Most importantly you have to remind yourself that you will be cooking for a crowd, which means the quantity has to be as good as the quality of food.

Preparation begins a night before the 4th of July party. Marinate the meat a night before, so that it absorbs the spices and turns out juicy and tender when you grill or smoke them the next day. Your 4th of July menu can include grill hamburger patties, pork chops, steaks and fish fillet or chunks. And don’t forget BBQ ribs for the adults, hotdogs for the kids, smoked vegetables for vegans.

Don’t miss the entertainment

Good music along with some laughter and fun enhance the taste of the food you eat. Some 4th of July family activities will help you go a long way in keeping your guests happy and entertained. In this weather, a pool is a good idea to cool off the heat. Some swings and games for the kids would keep them busy and allow parents to have a time out. Your teenager can help by spending time with the kids and playing with them. The most popular game among families is a card game. You can play a game of rummy indoors after everyone’s done with their food.

Organization is the key

Preparation on such a scale requires lot of hard work and organization. Parents can divide tasks among family members, handing out responsibilities according to their ability and age. Teen children can help their parents with different chores like shopping, marinating, cleaning the house, making salad etc. Go for a bigger space if you don’t have one at home. Make sure there is enough room for kids to play and chairs to accommodate everyone. Arrange some umbrella chairs, in case there is quite sunny outside.
Remember, being better prepared is better than having a disaster later. Have a happy 4th of July, and here's to a smashing barbecue!
