Alert for Parents: Teens Leaving Facebook For New Sites

Facebook seems to be under some pressure to retain its teenage users, which make up quite a sizeable chunk of its users. Reports confirm that many teenage users are moving on to other social media websites, leaving Facebook.

Tumblr, Instagram and Pinterest are the most used social media websites by teenagers. According to a survey conducted by a market research firm, YPulse, 18% of teenage users would rather login to Instagram than Facebook and 10% think Pinterest is more fun than Facebook. Experts believe that teenagers’ migration to other social media sites is usually because of an ever growing number of adults on Facebook, an increase in privacy and security of the site and the drama associated with posts made on different profiles.

Parents on Facebook

It seems parents are doing a pretty good job at keeping a vigilant eye on the activities of their teenagers on Facebook. Liking every post teens make or picture they upload, parents are ensuring their kids that they are under their watchful eye. However, too much of scrutiny and checks have driven the teens away from Facebook and towards other social media websites that are not much popular among adults.

Tumblr and Instagram appear to be the most sought after social media sites by the teens these days. It appears parents have yet to do some catching up with their teens on these sites. Away from parent monitoring, kids can now upload pictures and connect with strangers without having to disclose their identity.

Too much drama

A recent survey conducted by Pew Research found that teenagers are moving away from Facebook to new avenues like Tumblr. It was seen that teens with Facebook, Tumblr and Twitter accounts would prefer to spend more time on Tumblr. The website holds special attraction for teens because of its flexible privacy settings and access to various interesting stories and the freedom to post anything. Teenagers use social media for fun and other activities. But it seems they now prefer to stay away from the drama and arguments that erupt on Facebook, spend more time on Tumblr and Instagram.

Parents would have to catch up with the changing trends of social media world. They would have to understand the ins and outs of other popular social media sites like Tumblr and Instagram, so that they can keep an eye on their teens’ activities. Like they had to learn the ropes in the first decade of this century in order to understand how to use Facebook, they would have to apply the same skills and aptitude in understanding new social media sites.
