Fun ways to make your teen excited about Maths

With summer schools having the highest number of students in remedial course in math, teens around the world try to learn the math they never figured out in the first place. Even though many parents have been faced with this dilemma, they want their teen to excel in math. They fret over their teen’s grade in the subject and are ready to give incentives if a quiz is marked ‘A’. All these efforts are futile as the teen stands exactly where their parents had stood some years ago. They are not able to find fun in the square roots and pi. Here are, however, some ways to make math fun for your teen:

Be an exemplary parent

Even if you didn’t like math when you were growing up, do not let your teens hear that. This will channel a negative attitude to your teens. Set a positive example for your teen by being confident about the subject. This will help your child build a positive attitude toward math and strive for better grades in the subject.

Math games

How to make math interesting for children? Well, to increase your teen’s interest in math, video games or other games that involve your teen in solving mathematical problems are very helpful. They increase the mind’s capacity to solve math related problems and challenges the teen, which they strive to overcome.

Learning outside the school

Encouraging your teen to participate in activities outside school where they can practice math in different environment. This makes the teen respond proactively to math and other problematic situations that present themselves.

Another fun way to figure out how math works is to enroll your teen in a summer camp that incorporates math with science for a challenging experience. Local libraries, parks and other recreational organizations hold various educational camps during summer vacations which offer activities that boost the learning mind and prepare it for mathematical problems. For students who face major issues when solving math problems, a crash course or getting a tutor during the summer break will also be helpful. To make it fun, you can reintroduce your teen’s friend who is good as math as their tutor.

At home, there are also ways in which you can maintain or even improve your teen’s math skills. As mentioned above math-related video games are a great way to do that along with math-centric websites such as Illuminations which offer some practice problems. The more fun part about this website is that apart from solving practice papers, your teen can also refresh their math skills with interactive exercises and practical problems.

Other learning methods

While not exactly fun, the thing that will allow your teen to move swiftly ahead is revise and review previous tests, exams and assignments before going back to school. Even if the teen has not saved up their previous tests and assignments, teachers often post course outlines before classes start. Keeping in mind the curriculum and special requirements, you can help your teen overcome the hurdles that they are going to face in the future.
