Extended Family Household Might Just Be Excellent for Your Teen

Nuclear families can be a real piece of work these days. You or your spouse have to do jobs in order to pay the bills and raise enough money to ensure that your teen isn’t deprived of anything. This keeps you both busy for most part of the day, thus leaving your teen feeling neglected and confused. You have your reasons for not being there for them, but it doesn’t have to stay that way. You can opt for an extended family household.

What is an Extended Family?

Extended Family is a family setup that extends beyond nuclear family. Unlike the latter, which comprises of a father, a mother, and kids, extended family includes a household where grandparents, uncles, and aunts are also part of the household.

This may seem odd at first. However, there are several benefits of it. The best part about having an extended family is that it doesn’t just help you, it also helps your teenage kids in a lot of different ways, some of which have been outlined below.

You are Able to Spend More Quality Time with Your Teen

When you have more families living under the same roof, then all of them chip in for the monthly expenses. This saves you from overburdening yourself with jobs and gives you enough spare time for your family, especially your kids. You get to be there for them in their happy and sad moments, and you get to be there when they are feeling broken and need you the most. If you are not there for them when they need you around, then you’ll most likely find them distancing themselves from you for good as time passes and they grow older.

Someone is Always Watching Over the Teens

When it’s only you and your spouse looking after your teen, then it can be quite difficult to keep tabs on them all the time. When home alone, they can succumb to all sort of inappropriate activities like porn, drugs, and alcohol. However, if you’re living with extended family, there is almost always someone present in the house, making sure that no young member of the family is indulging in inappropriate or dangerous stuff.

Teens Grow Up to be More Caring

With grandparents, uncles, and aunts living in the same household, kids find themselves receiving more love and care. With time, they too develop a similar attitude, and begin to treat everyone elder than them with respect, and those younger than them with love. Being raised in such an environment instills positive family values in them, helping them become more disciplined, courteous, and respectful. Such teens go on to make their family proud, and prove themselves to be a huge asset for their society and country.
